Silhouettes Have Come A Long Way...
A new decoy manufacturer called North-East Decoys out of Quebec, Canada is
also striving for a more 3-D appearance in silhouettes but is taking a
different tack. North-East Decoys are covered with a patent pending
non-glare, permanent velvet finish. Viewed at a distance under any light
condition, the velvet finish gives the birds, particularly in the head and
neck area, a rounded, 3-dimensional appearance. Four neck postures are
available to promote the illusion of action and the necks swivel back
against the body for durability and added customization in the spread.
To help reduce the problem of the decoys disappearing when viewed from
overhead, the “3-D” North-East model has fold down sides also finished
with the special velvet process. Because of the illusion of “roundness”
that the velvet gives, the flat fold down sides do a good job of filling
out the decoy in the birds’ sight.
You can tell the folks at North-East Decoys are extreme waterfowl hunters
because of the attention they give to detail. For example, their snow
goose decoys have two different shades of velvet covering. One if the
typical pure white of a mature snow. The second is a dusty gray brown
which perfectly mimics an immature bird. In their own hunting, they mix in
the proper percentage of young birds to old birds based on the flyway
report on the nesting success and juvenile percentage of the migrating
flock!
